Kate and Laura Mulleavy

Filed under: Attire — admin @ 2:40 am

If you’ve been following the fashion scene, by now you’ve most likely heard the names Kate and Laura Mulleavy. New to the fashion world and hitting it full force, these two young girls are an inspiration for others. Without formal training but armed with determination, charm, and great ideas you reach your dreams.

Sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy new Rodarte line is full of nostalgia capturing the feel of the 1930s in America. It was only last year that sisters Kate and Laura decided to launch their own label Rodarte.

They were determined to cut no corners using only the most expensive fabrics.

Rodarte is based on the strong American spirit. Fashion icons such as Carole Lombard were inspirational to their designs. The Rodarte line can be found at Mix in Houston and Kirna Zaberte in New York.

26 year old Kate and 24 year old Laura both graduated from Berkeley. Neither has any formal fashion training, only a passion for the history of the past. Both have always had an interest in designing clothing.

Rodarte is named after their Grandfather a Zacatecan coal miner who immigrated to America during the Mexican Revolution. The family’s linage is very important to both girls. They are also very close to each other which is why they make such a great team.

These inseparable sisters have been in business a very short period of time when they got a break. The Mulleavy sisters introduced their small collection of silk dresses adorned with peacock feathers and Italian-wool evening coats.

Their collections were as aesthetically pleasing as the works of famous designers such as Calvin Klein. They certainly were the most talked about.

Kate and Laura wrote a letter to vintage guru Cameron Silver charming him with their 10 piece Rodarte collection. He invited them to set up shop during L.A. Fashion Week at Decades.
Even without formal training, it is very apparent that this sister act has a sense of style and design as their small Rodarte collection quickly gains momentum.

Their line will soon be found in some of the countries best boutiques. LA’s Satine, Houston’s Mix, Chicago’s Ikram, New York’s Kirna Zabette. They’ve even managed a private showing for Vogue’s Anna Wintour.

The collection ranges from $1300 to $2000 in price. It’s themed around the romantic west, nature, and their personal family linage. Their black wool crepe bodice dress is an all time favorite.

Made from strips of stiff fabric resembling tree trunks, with a delicate flowing skirt. The Earhart coat is a one pocket trench coat, and their military coat is black double faced wool accented with a thin row of pheasant feathers. How much closer to nature can you get?

Their fast growing recognition has people wondering who they know. The reality is they haven’t made their debut because of who they know. They’ve come to be on talent and the goodwill of the fashion industry.

Their current collection is exactly what stylish women want to wear. Their talent is excellent, there genuine about wanting to design and their personalities are drawing.

It will be interesting to see where these girls are in a few years.

ABC’s of Publishing – About Agents

Filed under: The Publishers Way — admin @ 7:50 pm

While there’s no Golden Rule to “Being Published”; it appears
the only way to get your foot in the door is to have a respected
literary agent hold it open. (I can’t count the number of times
my toes, and my ego, have been smashed.) Most of the large NY
publishing houses don’t accept unagented queries, and those that
do will assign assistant editors to muck through the slush pile.
A good literary agent has spent years in the publishing
business, building relationships with editors, studying the
market, knowing what editors are looking for and which
publishers specialize in specific markets or genres. They will
be your guide and your advocate to the publishing world. The
trick is finding a good literary agent. By now you have probably
heard many horror stories about disreputable agents. If not, do
yourself a favor and read the information at Writer Beware,
http://www.sfwa.org/beware/agents.html. Be wary of any agent
that charges an upfront fee, regardless of what they call it, or
an agent that requires an author to use editing or marketing
services as a condition of representation. Agents who make their
money up front, as reading fees or marketing fees, or who
receive a kickback from referrals, are not motivated to sell
books. The anonymity of the Internet provides an ideal
environment for these creative con artists but it also lets us
warn others. According to Writer Beware, here are few methods
employed by dishonest agents:

•Reading Fees – This practice, once seen with some reputable
agents, has been abused to the point it is now prohibited
Association of Authors’ Representatives for members. •Evaluation
or Critique Fee – If you feel that you need a critique, why not
hire the services of a reputable editor? •Submission or Handling
Fee – Good agents make money selling books, not selling
contracts for representation. •Submission Expenses – Reputable
agents don’t routinely bill their clients out-of-pocket. These
expenses may include a large number of manuscript copies, color
printing, photos, etc. •Sliding scale of Fees – Good agents do
as much work as is needed to sell a book, all for the same 15%
commission. •Selling “adjunct” services – Websites design, book
cover design, illustrations, etc. etc. It’s a conflict of
interest for an agent to offer paid services.

As you can see from this list, dishonest agents are as
imaginative and creative as the writers they swindle.
Unfortunately, there are no licensing requirements, regulatory
agency or competency standards for literary agents. One
organization that self regulates literary agents is the
Association of Authors’ Representatives or AAR. To become a
member of AAR, an agent must meet certain criteria, years in
business, number of clients, no upfront fees, etc. While there
are no guarantees, your odds of selecting a reputable agent will
be greatly increased if they are a member of AAR or similar
organization. According to AAR,
http://www.aar-online.org/faq.html, “Literary agents are listed
in many sources, including Literary Market Place, a directory of
the publishing industry, which is available at most libraries.
You may also ask for recommendations from editors, writing
instructors, or fellow writers.”

According to Susan Rabiner and Alfred Fortunato, authors of
Thinking Like Your Editor: How to Write Great Serious Nonfiction
– and Get It Published, you can also locate an agent a your
favorite bookstore: “…check out all the book sections, to
determine where your book would likely be shelved in that store.
>From that section, pick up a book similar to yours in content
and presentation, one that you believe appeals to the same
reader your book will appeal to. Turn to the “Acknowledgments”
page, located either in the front of the book or the back. The
author will often thank his or her literary agent. Put that
agent’s name on your list of possible agents.” There are two
online services that may be of use, for a small fee. “The first
is www.publishersweekly.com, and the second is
publisherslunch.com… they list each week’s new sales to the
publishing industry and the name of the agent who sold the
book.” The final suggestion offered by Rabiner and Fortunato is
to attend writers’ conferences. Editors are usually in
attendance and you can ask for their recommendation of a good
agent. (This is also useful when you submit your query letter:
“Mr. Editor suggested I contact you regarding my book…”) To
contact an agent, write a short introductory letter which should
be informational, no more than one page in length, to the point
and professional. Tell the agent if your work is fictional, non
fictional, include a sentence or two summarizing the book and
then a brief summary of your credentials. Do not make claims
that your book will be the next best seller, or comparisons to
other works. Include a SASE (self addressed stamped envelope) if
you would like a reply.

It is acceptable to submit your work to more than one agent at a
time, however, you should let them know your work has been sent
to other agents.

Many agents will not accept queries by phone, fax or email, so
you should use snail mail for all submissions. Upon request, you
can submit additional information, such as writing sample and
story synopsis.

Once you have retained the services of an agent, you can expect
them to provide guidance regarding the quality and marketability
of your work. According to AAR, your agent may:

•Offer editorial guidance. •Establish contacts for you with
firms and persons who are acquiring rights to literary and/or
dramatic material. •Advise you about current trends conditions,
practices, and contractual terms. •Market your literary material
and rights therein. Negotiate and review licensing agreements.
•Review royalty statements. •Monitor licensees’ marketing of
your work.

Agent representation is valuable when it comes to submitting
works to publishers. Publishers depend on agents as a first
screen to marketable work. Inept agents who submit marginal work
to a plethora of publishers will develop a poor reputation and
likely be ignored. Agents must exercise discretion, and the best
agents will be highly selective when taking on new clients.

Holly Lisle, author of several published works including: Fire
in the Mist, Diplomacy of Wolves, Vengeance of Dragons, and
Courage of Falcons offers advise on finding the right agent @
http://hollylisle.com/fm/Articles/faqs3.html. “The majority of
queries any agent receives—probably around 99%—are rejected
because they lack whatever spark that agent is looking for. This
doesn’t mean they’re hopeless—what is wrong for one agent
might be right for another. Remember that the agent you want
will love the genre you work in and know the publishers and
editors who publish it, and will love the work you do. Make sure
the work you send out is your best, that it is professionally
formatted, free of errors, and entirely yours.” She also
recommends that you research the type of work an agent
represents. “Read their descriptions of what they’re looking for
and believe them—an agent who doesn’t like science fiction
won’t like your science fiction, and won’t appreciate having his
time wasted by yet another beginner who has proved by querying
him that he is a beginner, and worse yet, can’t follow
instructions.”

Do you still wonder whether or not you need an agent? I guess
the question to you would be: “Do you want to be a writer, or do
you want to be an agent?” Lisle offers the final bit of advice
on the subject: “Good agents do much more than find homes for
manuscripts. If he (or she) did nothing more for you than remove
bad clauses from contracts, the agent would be worth his ten or
fifteen percent.”

Home Loans

Filed under: Real Estate — admin @ 5:34 pm

Approvals of home loans in January 2005 fell to their lowest level since January 1999. Only 126,300 mortgage loans were approved throughout the month, representing a 28% year-on-year drop in mortgage loan approvals. With competition between lenders in the home loans market remaining strong, and fewer mortgage applications to go round, now is a good time to take stock of your mortgage with a view to moving your home loan to a more competitive home loans provider.

Are you paying too much for your mortgage?

Many home owners across the UK do not realise that they are paying too much for their mortgage. A recent survey conducted on behalf of one of the major high street lenders who have a presence on the Internet concluded that at least a third of home owners are paying as much as 2% more for their home loans than they should be. If you’re on a standard variable mortgage rate or have been on a discounted loans product or fixed rate loans product where the preferential rates period has expired, then you too could be paying more than you need to for your home loan.

How to get the best deal on home loans.

To see if you are paying over the odds for your mortgage you’ll need to dig out your last mortgage statement. On the statement it will quote the interest rate you are paying and will most likely quote the loans product that you are signed up to. To see if you can get a better deal all you need do is search the Internet for UK mortgage loans and take a look at the products on offer.

Some of the best loans can currently be found in fixed rate mortgages. Interest rates are as low as 4.44% in some instances, fixed for 3 years or more. Even a five-year fixed home loan may be taken out with some lenders for around 5%.

Some important points!

Before transferring your home loan to another provider it is important to consider the following points…

1) Restrictions on current mortgage loans – do you have any penalty clauses in your home loan that would be charged if you were to swap mortgage provider? Penalty clauses are common on discounted home loan products and fixed rate mortgage loans, tying you in to that product for a set period of time.

2) Arrangement fees – Many loans providers who offer low interest rates to their customers compensate for their loss by increasing their credit arrangement fees and other additional charges such as valuation fees. It is a good idea to look out for loans companies that are running offers of reduced arrangement fees and/or free valuations, enabling you to get the best deal.

Being Determined – What Good Will That Do?

Filed under: Universe Of Self Improvement — admin @ 10:32 am

‘Consider the postage stamp: its usefulness consists in the ability to stick to one thing till it gets there.’ — Josh Billings

On Sunday, June 19th 2005, I was fortunate enough to see hundreds of cyclists, young and less young, tackle the 13th Scottish Bikeathon in aid of Leukaemia Research. The course of 26 miles wound its way through the spectacular Highland countryside, with some breathtaking sights along the way, as well as some pretty steep hills. What impressed me was not so much the fit and athletic who completed the course in next to no time, but the others who didn’t usually attempt this kind of thing, but were absolutely determined to complete the 26 mile course. One of those was a 7 year old girl, who along with her father, slogged along from 10.45 in the morning until 3.30 in the afternoon, with only a half hour break for lunch. She wasn’t the fastest, in fact I think she was the slowest, but she was not going to give up! That was determination! As she came to the finish there was the biggest, brightest smile I have seen in a long time. All that effort was definitely worth it and I know she’ll be doing it again next year. How do I know? She told me. You see, she is my daughter.

How can determination help to move you towards your goals? The goal here was the finish of a somewhat tough 26 mile course. It was in the same place as the starting point, so was a clear landmark in everyone’s minds. In this case, moving towards the goal was made simpler by the fact that everyone was riding bicycles! If you didn’t do something, like pedalling, you would go nowhere! However, you had to be determined to reach that goal. There was ample opportunity to give up, as there were support vehicles ready to take the weary and exhausted back to the start, and no-one would have judged you for it. The last half was particularly challenging, as there were quite a few long steep hills to climb. Completing the 26 miles was no simple task.

Can being determined help you do what you’ve been putting off for a while? Yes, indeed! Why not follow the example of those fantastic cyclists and get on your bike! Or put on your training shoes, or walking boots. Or join a dance class! What have you been putting off? What is weighing heavy on your mind that needs a kick-start? Do you really take care of yourself? What can you add into your life that will make a difference to your health and wellbeing? Show some determination and do something!

Determine to do something for yourself. A wonderful day out in the fresh, clean air, doing something to raise money for charity in the company of like-minded people. I don’t know of anyone who participated in the Bikeathon who didn’t have a tremendous sense of satisfaction at completing the course. This was the ideal situation of doing something challenging for you while helping others. Why not see if something similar is taking place somewhere near you?

Determine to do something active every day. You don’t really get more active than this! 26 miles up and down hills. Pedalling hard and breathing with your full lung capacity. This is activity at its best! Activity of one form or another will not only give you a healthier body, but a healthier mind.

Be determined to do something because you want to, not because you have to. Everyone who was participating was there because they wanted to be. This is not an event that you have to do. There are many people who have never taken part, including myself, who are not judged by those who do. There is a party atmosphere, with some people putting on fancy dress, and the whole day is one of celebration. Celebrating life to help those who are struggling with a threat to theirs.

Determine to do something new every day. For many people taking part this was definitely a new experience. And for many of those, it is an experience they are determined to repeat next year!

Be determined to do something creative every week. Creativity manifests itself in many ways. Our imagination takes flight and we can see ourselves achieving all sorts of resourceful and inspirational things. Just cycling through the glorious Highland scenery is bound to have set someone’s creative juices flowing. I’m willing to bet on it! What a great feeling!

Make sure you are determined to do something for nothing. This one is a tough one. This event was not for nothing. It was to raise as much as possible for the charity Leukaemia Research. However, I don’t think there was one person taking part who did so for any recognition or glory. They took part for the challenge and the fun of it, and because they were determined to do it!

Isn’t it time you became determined?

Risk Management – Sub-Contractors

Filed under: House Of Management — admin @ 2:26 am

Risk management and assessment of sub-contractors and suppliers must start early in the life of a bid. As soon as the need for bought in items is identified and a list of potential sub-contractors created, the risk management process kicks in.

Risk assessment of sub-contractors becomes more essential, the more complex the item of supply and the fewer suppliers there are to choose from.

The amount and importance of risk management goes in this order, starting with the most difficult:

If the system requires a complicated piece of modified software based on an existing proprietary software, then due to copyright issues, only the original owner of the code can be approached to change it as required. This is a sole source supply involving software development, which is notoriously difficult, and needs to be micro-managed in order to succeed.

Equally, if a complicated bespoke software is needed, even given that there are a number of sub-contractors capable of doing the work, it is a very risky business and needs careful management.

Items of hardware which will be designed and manufactured specifically for this project or which require special manufacturing processes need a high degree of careful risk management.

Next down the chain in terms of risk are specialist items of proprietary hardware. Again, this is likely to be a sole-source item, which in itself carries risk.

Alternatively, the risk involved in buying standard commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) items of either hardware or software where there are various similar products to choose from, is fairly low, but still exists and management will be required.

In a nutshell, the order of risk, starting with the highest is:

Sole source software development
Multiple source software development
Sole source complex COTS software requiring system integration
Sole source hardware development and manufacture
Multiple source hardware development and manufacture
COTS Software supply
COTS Hardware supply

Each of these scenarios carry different types and quantities of risks, making individual plans for their management absolutely essential.

In our next article we’ll look and the management of risk associated with selecting potential sub-contractors.

50th Anniversary Gift Ideas

Filed under: Hall Of Lifestyle — admin @ 10:53 pm

A 50th wedding anniversary gift commemorates a milestone most married couples wish to reach. What can you possibly give a couple after 50 years of marriage? The most meaningful wedding anniversary gift is one that comes from the heart: to express your love and appreciation towards all that they mean to you, how their staying married through the thick and thin of life has influenced you, to tell about the warm and loving memories you shared with them throughout the years.

The 50th anniversary is commemorated by gold and the flower is violet. A gift certainly doesn’t have to be gold, wrap a gift in gold paper or paper decorated with violets.

50th anniversary gift ideas for the couple

• Keepsake personalized anniversary gifts, such as a photo quilt or pillow

• Monthly or quarterly lo-carb, dietetic or fruit gift baskets

• Restore their wedding photo and place in a gold frame

• Have a painting or caricature made out of their wedding photo

• As they probably don’t cook for themselves as much, gift certificates to restaurants would be appreciated

• A gift of theater or concert subscription tickets. Make them a patron with VIP privileges

• The children can create a 50th anniversary keepsake journal gift. Ask family and friends to write a paragraph or two to share a memory with their parents. Or ask for a photo with the couple that the children don’t have and write a caption about it

• Instead of a guest book, buy a music box and fill it with messages of love written on gold or handmade paper from family and friends

• Are they up for a cruise? Take them on a weekend or week long cruise. They probably will enjoy sharing this vacation with others

• What could help them personally? Can you lease a car for them? Pay for a kitchen or other home renovation?

• Do they golf? Pay for private lessons or a VIP membership at their favorite club. Buy two clubs, have them engraved and then gold plated

• What hobbies do they enjoy? Give them gift certificates to their favorite craft or hobby store.

• Buy tickets to a favorite event and pay for their lodging and food expenses

• Do they volunteer or have a favorite charity? Contribute to their favorite organization. Find out if a plaque or some other special mention can be given in their name

Make up “Gift of Time” or “Labor of Love” coupons to take them out to their favorite restaurant, make them a home-cooked meal, chauffeur them on a shopping trip, run errands for them, take them to a show or movie, have a local landscaping company take care of their property, have their home repainted.
